Savina Giannatou

A wedding song from Kalymnos, known throughout the Dodecanese. It is played as dawn breaks and the wedding festivities draw to an end.

The dawn has broken, a new day has come,
now the birds, the swallows, now they sing.

Now they sing,
now they give voice and say:
Awaken my prince,
awaken and embrace
a body straight and tall as the cypress
and a pure white neck.
